    Gender-sensitive Citizenship

Our ‘Gender-sensitive Citizenship’ discussions are very much a part of our ‘Critical Citizen’ series of programmes initiated in 2005. The ‘Gender-sensitive Citizenship’ discussions are more specifically aimed at making education gender-just and turning educational institutions into gender-sensitive spaces. It tries to develop conceptual clarity around gender issues and its links with other social processes and forms of inequity. It also extends this conceptual focus on to a specific geographical area, namely an island in the Sunderban delta and helps improve the access of grassroots women and young people to knowledge and information about women’s rights and on gender, sexuality, gender-based violence issues.

For details about our gender-sensitive citizenship programme in Sunderban, please see the page Dialogue with Disha.

    • Covid 19 and the lockdown have particularly threatened the rights and safety of marginalized women and girls in India. In the rural interiors of Bengal, loss of livelihoods, poverty and social bias have exponentially increased discrimination and violence against women and girls leading to further malnourishment, school drop-outs, early marriages, domestic violence and trafficking. Moreover, the second wave of the pandemic sweeping through India now is severely challenging the physical and psychological well being of these girls. In this scenario Ebong Alap has organized many small-scale relief initiatives for the people of Piyali area of Canning Block in South 24 Parganas and has supplied educational materials for adolescent students since the lockdown and Cyclone Amphan in 2020. We are in continual engagement with the girls and their families through a series of workshops and programmes. In March 2021 we celebrated International Working Women’s Day in Piyali. The day started with a welcome note by our field worker Tapasi Mondal stating the ground and its profound impact on young students in the locality. She also addressed the regular engagements with these students and how it is helping the adolescents cope with the situation. Tapasi’s talk was followed by a series of performance by boys and girls from different age groups, a debate competition around the question of discrimination on the basis of gender and finally a group entertainment sport that comments upon challenging social injustices and violence against women. In April we organized a gender training session followed by a poster making workshop. Students from different age, gender and family backgrounds participated in the programme and expressed their thoughts and learning through the posters around social oppression and gender discrimination as reflected in their everyday realities. We have also been working towards building a knowledge resource centre with books, electronic devices, internet facilities and other resources for adolescents of Piyali. This centre will not only endorse their right to education, but will also ensure their overall well being through a support network where they regularly engage with each other and with the mentors, field volunteers, visiting facilitators. This series of programmes essentially focus on inclusivity, accessibility and the safety of adolescent students in Piyali through a process of strengthening their capacities.
