Critical Citizenship workshops

Through our ‘Critical Citizen’ series of workshops since 2005 we have been targeting students and teachers in educational spaces beyond the colleges and schools disseminating knowledge in English. One of the paradoxes of our age of information explosion is that most information is still contained in pockets and among the population that is fluent in English. It is not accessible to the large number of people living in urban, semi-urban and rural areas. Through this initiative, we have been breaking two hierarchies of knowledge distribution—the urban-rural divide by going outside Kolkata, as well as the language barrier by specifically choosing educational institutions where students faced challenges in deciphering a knowledge system dominated by English.

The Critical Citizen conceptualizes knowledge as a mutually enriching process of exchange and communication. It attempts to initiate fruitful dialogues particularly with young people to share in their experiences and perceptions of issues. Its aim is to create new and more democratic pedagogical practices through interactive day-long workshops that generate action-oriented public opinion among the youth.

Critical Citizenship workshops at a glance

• The Ebong  Alap team with support from Aman Trust implemented the first phase of the Critical Citizenship workshops in two separate clusters of undergraduate colleges in Kolkata and Bardhaman in 2005-06. The topics chosen for the workshops were: Gender, Communalism and Globalisation. Not only were these issues considered to be central to the concerns of the youth and vital for developing “critical citizenship”, they were also concepts that the Ebong Alap team felt, were surrounded by misconceptions and obfuscations. Ebong Alap had already published books on these themes which were used as additional material at the workshops. The workshop team worked with two clusters of colleges, one based in North Kolkata (a cluster consisting of four participating undergraduate institutions; Maharani Kashishwari College, Vidyasagar College, Victoria Institution and Bethune College) and the other in Bardhaman (a cluster consisting of three participating undergraduate colleges; Raj College, Shyamsundar College and Maharaja Udaychand Women’s College along with some students from the Bardhaman University), deliberately choosing institutions which were out of the elite circuit of sponsored “events” “fests” and symposia and catered to middle and lower middle class students, from urban, semi-urban and even rural backgrounds.
• Critical Citizenship Series workshops in the second phase happened in 2007—the context being the unnatural death of Rizwanur Rahman, a young educated professional from a lower middle class Muslim family of Kolkata who had married a rich Hindu businessman’s daughter a few days before his death. The focus of discussions this time was on right to choice in sexual relationships. A series of colloquia called ‘After Rizwanur’ were held amongst college students in Jadavpur University, and a few other undergraduate colleges in Kolkata and its suburbs. In continuation of the ‘After Rizwanur’ discussions, Ebong Alap collaborated with AALI of Lucknow to hold a series of workshops on right to choice in relationships in 2008-09. The workshops this time were held at three different locations—Kolkata, Barasat and Sundarbans—with three different groups of people. They were community workers, university students, and high school teachers.
• The third phase of the Critical Citizenship Series began in 2013 with a colloquium held on safety and well-being of women and girls on campuses of West Bengal. College teachers and directors of Women’s Studies centres from across the state participated. This was done in collaboration with UGC’s Eastern Regional Office and Calcutta University Women’s Studies Research Centre. The recommendations of this consultation have been later included in the UGC report ‘SAKSHAM: Measures for ensuring Safety of Women and Programmes for Gender Sensitisation on Campuses’ published in December 2013. • In the third phase of the Critical Citizenship Series ‘Junior Lokjon Ek Hao’,  a workshop on safety and mobility of women in the public sphere was held in September 2013 in Jadavpur University with students of several colleges from Kolkata, Kalyani University and West Bengal State University, Barasat.
• The Critical Citizenship Series continued in 2014 in collaboration with Aman Trust. A series of three programmes were held between July and December 2014. Two of these programmes were held with college students and jointly with the Centre for Marxian Studies, Jadavpur University. The focus areas of these two programmes were – Religious Right in a Neo-liberal India, and Communalism, Violence and Cultural Censorship.  The third programme with Aman Trust in this series was held in National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) Kolkata in December 2014. It was 2-day national symposium on Political and Sexual Violence in Contemporary India. Academics, activists and performers from all over the country participated in this symposium.
• In the spirit of the Critical Citizenship Series, Ebong Alap jointly organized along with four other NGOs the first eastern regional men’s symposium in September 2014 in Kolkata. The focus of the symposium was ‘Men and Boys for Gender Justice’. A discussion on masculinity with college/university was convened by Ebong Alap as part of the symposium.
• Ebong Alap organised a series of workshops on pluralism and communal harmony with students of four high schools in Bali island, Sunderban from December 2018 to March 2019. This months long project carried a special name 'Alap Milap'. The participants were involved in group exercises and interactions which focused on socio-cultural identities and everyday realities of different social and religious communities living in the Sunderbans. Workshops were followed by a culminating programme on March 16 2019 celebrating International Working Women's Day with student-volunteers, their parents, local administrators and community people. 
• Ebong Alap organised a poster exhibition Ubacho: In Her Own Words amplifying voices of women and their struggle for freedom from 1 to 5 June at Gorky Sadan in Kolkata . Posters with quotes and images of women have been featured in this exhibition. These posters recreate our social and political histories in an innovative and informative manner through words of women who fought for various kinds of freedom; freedom of our country from colonial rule, freedom to read and write, freedom from caste oppression, freedom to work in their chosen fields and freedom from numerous other kinds of patriarchal and sectarian oppression. 
• Ebong Alap organised a symposium on NRC and Rights of women over land on 8 September at Bethune Institute for Geriatrics Research and Rehabilitation Centre in Kolkata. A musical evening in essence, this gathering was dedicated to Professor Jashodhara Bagchi. Research scholar and vocalist Shabnam Surita who is originally from Silchar, Assam was our guest artist who performed a unique choice of Bengali songs from different times and traditions in relation to her discussion on the historical struggle of women for their rights over land and their individual identity and the present situation in Assam.

‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালা

২০০৫ সাল থেকে আমরা ধারাবাহিকভাবে বিভিন্ন ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালার মাধ্যমে বাঙলা মাধ্যমের স্কুল ও কলেজের ছাত্রছাত্রী এবং শিক্ষকদের সাথে যোগাযোগ তৈরি করার চেষ্টা করে চলেছি। তথ্যের বিস্ফোরণের এই যুগে আজও অধিকাংশ তথ্যের যোগান সেইসব মানুষের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ, যাঁরা ইংরাজি ভাষায় সাবলীল। শহর, মফস্বল ও গ্রামের একটা বড় অংশের মানুষের কাছেই এইসব তথ্য পৌঁছয় না। কর্মশালাগুলির মাধ্যমে আমরা জ্ঞানের বণ্টনের দু’ধরনের বৈষম্য ঘোচানোর চেষ্টা করে চলেছি। এক, শহর ও গ্রামের মধ্যেকার বৈষম্য, যার জন্য নিয়মিতভাবে কলকাতার বাইরে কর্মশালা আয়োজন করা হয়; এবং দুই, ভাষার বৈষম্য, যার কথা মাথায় রেখে সেইসকল শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানেই কর্মশালা আয়োজন করা হয় যেখানকার ছাত্রছাত্রীরা ইংরাজি ভাষায় যাবতীয় পড়াশুনা করতে গিয়ে বিভিন্ন সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হন।

‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালার মাধ্যমে জ্ঞান আহরণের প্রক্রিয়াকে আদানপ্রদান ও আলাপের মাধ্যমে চিহ্নিত করা হয়, যেখানে উভয়পক্ষই একে অপরের থেকে কিছু না কিছু শেখে। এই পদ্ধতিতে কমবয়সী ছাত্রছাত্রীদের নিজেদের অভিজ্ঞতা ভাগ করে নিতে উৎসাহ দেওয়া হয়, যাতে বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে তাদের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি উঠে আসে এবং আলোচনার ক্ষেত্র তৈরি হয়। সারাদিনব্যাপী কর্মশালায় নতুন ধরনের এবং আরও গণতান্ত্রিক এক পরিসর তৈরি করা হয় যাতে বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে ছাত্রছাত্রীরা সক্রিয় জনমত গড়ে তুলতে পারে।

 আমাদের সচেতন নাগরিক কর্মশালাগুলি একনজরে

• ২০০৫-০৬ সালে দিল্লীর আমন ট্রাস্টের সহায়তায় ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালার প্রথম পর্যায় সম্পন্ন হয় আলাদাভাবে কলকাতা ও বর্ধমান জেলার কয়েকটি কলেজকে কেন্দ্র করে। এই কর্মশালাগুলির বিষয় ছিল: জেন্ডার, সাম্প্রদায়িকতা ও বিশ্বায়ন। এই বিষয়গুলি যে শুধুমাত্র সচেতন নাগরিকত্ব গড়ে তোলার জন্য খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তাই-ই নয়, ‘এবং আলাপ’ টীমের মতে এই বিষয়গুলি সম্মন্ধে মানুষের ধারণা অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই ধোঁয়াশাচ্ছন্ন। কর্মশালাগুলির আগেই ‘এবং আলাপ’ উক্ত বিষয়গুলির উপর বই প্রকাশ করেছিল, যা ওই কর্মশালাগুলিতে কাজে লাগানো হয়। এই কর্মশালাগুলি আয়োজন করা হয় উত্তর কলকাতা(যে চারটি কলেজে কর্মশালা আয়োজন করা হয় সেগুলি হল মহারানী কাশীশ্বরী কলেজ, বিদ্যাসাগর কলেজ, ভিক্টোরিয়া ইন্সটিটিউশন এবং বেথুন কলেজ) এবং বর্ধমান (রাজ কলেজ, শ্যামসুন্দর কলেজ, মহারাজা উদয়চাঁদ উইমেন’স কলেজ এবং বর্ধমান বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে) জেলায়। ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবেই এমন কলেজ বাছা হয়েছিলো যেগুলো কর্পোরেট স্পনসরশিপ নিয়ে ফেস্ট করার মতো তথাকথিত ‘এলিট’ নয়, যে কলেজগুলিতে শহর, মফস্বল এমনকি প্রত্যন্ত গ্রাম থেকে মধ্যবিত্ত এবং নিম্নমধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারের ছাত্রছাত্রী পড়তে আসেন।
• দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ের ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালা আয়োজিত হয় ২০০৭ সালে – রিজওয়ানুর রহমানের অস্বাভাবিক মৃত্যুর পর। রিজওয়ানুর কলকাতার এক নিম্নমধ্যবিত্ত মুসলিম পরিবারের শিক্ষিত চাকুরীজীবী, যাঁর মৃত্যুর কিছুদিন আগে শহরের এক ধনী হিন্দু ব্যবসায়ীর মেয়ের সাথে বিয়ে হয়। এই পর্যায়ের কর্মশালার বিষয় ছিল সঙ্গী নির্বাচনের অধিকার। ছাত্রছাত্রীদের সাথে ‘রিজওয়ানুরের পর’ শীর্ষক এই আলোচনাসভা যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এবং কলকাতা ও শহরতলির বেশ কিছু কলেজে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। ‘রিজওয়ানুরের পর’ আলোচনার সূত্র ধরেই, ২০০৮-০৯ সালে লক্ষ্ণৌয়ের ‘আলি’ সংস্থার সাথে যৌথভাবে ‘এবং আলাপ’ সঙ্গী নির্বাচনের অধিকার বিষয়ে একাধিক কর্মশালা আয়োজন করে। এই পর্যায়ে, তিনটি জায়গায় কর্মশালার আয়োজন করা হয় – কলকাতা, বারাসাত এবং সুন্দরবন। এই তিন জায়গার কর্মশালায় তিনধরনের মানুষ অংশগ্রহণ করেন – স্থানীয় সমাজকর্মী, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রছাত্রী এবং স্কুলশিক্ষক।
• ২০১৩ সালে ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালার তৃতীয় ধাপ শুরু হয় একটি আলোচনাসভার মাধ্যমে, যার বিষয় ছিল পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কলেজ-বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে মেয়েদের ভালো থাকা ও নিরাপত্তা। কলেজ শিক্ষক এবং রাজ্যের বিভিন্ন মানবীবিদ্যাচর্চা কেন্দ্রের ডিরেক্টররা আলোচনায় অংশগ্রহণ করেন। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় মঞ্জুরি কমিশনের(UGC) ইস্টার্ন রিজিওনাল সেন্টার ও কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উইমেন’স স্টাডিজ রিসার্চ সেন্টারের সহায়তায় ‘এবং আলাপ’ এই আলোচনাসভার আয়োজন করে। এই আলোচনাসভার সুপারিশগুলি ২০১৩ সালের ডিসেম্বরে প্রকাশিত UGC-এর রিপোর্ট SAKSHAM: Measures for ensuring Safety of Women and Programmes for Gender Sensitisation on Campuses –এ অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়। SAKSHAM রিপোর্টে ‘এবং আলাপ’-এর আলোচনাসভার সুপারিশগুলো পড়বার জন্য এই ওয়েবসাইটের নীতি নির্ধারণ অংশটি দেখুন।
• ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালার তৃতীয় পর্যায়ে পথেঘাটে মেয়েদের অবাধে চলাচল এবং নিরাপত্তা বিষয়ে ‘জুনিয়র লোকজন এক হও’ শীর্ষক একটি কর্মশালার আয়োজন করা হয় সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১৩-এ। যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আয়োজিত এই কর্মশালায় কলকাতার বিভিন্ন কলেজ, কল্যাণী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং বারাসাতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গ রাষ্ট্রীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্রছাত্রীরা অংশগ্রহণ করে।
• ২০১৪ সালেও আমন ট্রাস্টের সহায়তায় ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ সিরিজের অধীনে বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচী নেওয়া হয়। ২০১৪ সালের জুলাই থেকে ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে তিনটি উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়। এর মধ্যে দুটি কলেজের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের নিয়ে যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সেন্টার ফর মার্ক্সিয়ান স্টাডিজের সাথে যৌথভাবে আয়োজন করা হয়। এই দুই অনুষ্ঠানের মুখ্য বিষয় ছিল ‘নব্য-উদারনৈতিক ভারতে ধর্মীয় অধিকার’ এবং ‘মৌলবাদ, হিংসা ও সাংস্কৃতিক সেন্সরশিপ’। তৃতীয় আলোচনাসভাটি আমন ট্রাস্টের সহায়তায় ২০১৪ সালের ডিসেম্বরে আয়োজিত হয় কলকাতার ন্যাশনাল ইউনিভার্সিটি অফ জুরিডিক্যাল সায়েন্সেস(NUJS)-এ। দু’ দিনের এই সর্বভারতীয় আলোচনাচক্রের বিষয় ছিল ‘বর্তমান ভারতে রাজনৈতিক ও যৌন হিংসা’। দেশের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তের শিক্ষাবিদ, সমাজকর্মী এবং নাট্যকর্মীরা এতে অংশ নেন।
• ‘সচেতন নাগরিক’ কর্মশালার মূলসূত্র ধরেই, ‘এবং আলাপ’ আরও চারটি সংস্থার সাথে যৌথভাবে ২০১৪ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরে কলকাতায় পূর্ব ভারতের রাজ্যগুলিকে নিয়ে একটি আলোচনাচক্রের আয়োজন করে। এর মূল বিষয় ছিল ‘লিঙ্গন্যায়ের পক্ষে পুরুষ এবং ছেলেরা’। ‘এবং আলাপ’ কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের সাথে ম্যাসকুলিনিটি বা পৌরুষের বিভিন্ন প্রকাশ নিয়ে আলোচনা করে এই সিম্পোসিয়ামে।
• সুন্দরবনের বালি দ্বীপের চারটি হাই স্কুলের ছাত্রছাত্রীদের নিয়ে ডিসেম্বর ২০১৮ থেকে মার্চ ২০১৯ পর্যন্ত পরপর বেশ কয়েকটি কর্মশালার আয়োজন করেছে এবং আলাপ। এই কর্মশালার নাম দেওয়া হয়েছিল 'আলাপ মিলাপ'। সুন্দরবন এলাকায় দীর্ঘদিন ধরে পাশাপাশি বসবাসকারী বিভিন্ন ধর্মীয় ও সামাজিক গোষ্ঠীর মানুষের মধ্যে পরস্পরকে চেনা ও একে অপরের সংস্কৃতিকে জানার মাধ্যমে সম্প্রীতি ও সৌহার্দ্যের ভাব বহাল রাখার উদ্দেশ্যে ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের সঙ্গে সরাসরি এই কর্মশালাগুলি আয়োজিত হয়েছে। একটানা কয়েক মাস ব্যাপী কর্মশালার শেষে ১৬ মার্চ ২০১৯ আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রমজীবি নারী দিবস উপলক্ষ্যে বালি দ্বীপে আয়োজিত 'আলাপ মিলাপ' অনুষ্ঠানে ছাত্রছাত্রী এবং স্থানীয় মানুষ বিবিধ সংস্কৃতিমূলক অনুষ্ঠানে অংশগ্রহণ করেন। উপস্থিত ছিলেন অভিভাবকেরা, কলকাতা থেকে আগত বিশেষ অতিথিরা, স্থানীয় প্রশাসনিক কর্মকর্তা এবং স্কুলগুলির শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকারা। 
• গত ১ থেকে ৫ জুন কলকাতার গোর্কি সদনে হয়ে গেল উবাচ পোস্টার প্রদর্শনী। ‘উবাচ’ পোস্টার সিরিজ তৈরি হয়েছে নানা স্বাধীনতার লড়াইয়ে শরিক মেয়েদের কথা ও ছবি দিয়ে। তাঁদেরই লেখা বা সাক্ষাৎকার থেকে উদ্ধৃতি ব্যবহার করে এই পোস্টারগুলো তুলে ধরতে চেয়েছে সমাজ-সংস্কৃতি-রাজনীতি ক্ষেত্রে মেয়েদের বহুমাত্রিক লড়াই। এই সিরিজে এখনো পর্যন্ত পোস্টার তৈরি হয়েছে ৫২ টি, যার মধ্যে আছেন ইসমাত চুগতাই, বামা ও বেবী হালদারের মতো লেখিকা, মেরি কম ও পিঙ্কি প্রামাণিকের মতো খেলোয়াড়, বীণা দাস ও কল্পনা দত্ত-এর মতো রাজনৈতিক কর্মী।

• ৮ই সেপ্টেম্বর ২০১৯ কলকাতার বেথুন ইনস্টিটিউশন অব জেরিয়াট্রিকস রিসার্চ এন্ড রিহ্যাবিলিটেশন সেণ্টারে এনআরসি এবং মেয়েদের জমির মালিকানা প্রসঙ্গে একটি সিম্পোসিয়ামের আয়োজন করেছিল এবং আলাপ। আসামের সমসাময়িক পরিস্থিতির সাপেক্ষে মেয়েদের অবস্থা, এবং জমি ও সম্পত্তির উপরে অধিকার নিয়ে দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে মেয়েদের লড়াইয়ের ইতিহাস গানে আর কথায় উপস্থাপিত করলেন আসামের শিলচরের মানুষ শবনম সুরিতা। তাঁর নির্বাচিত লোক ও আধুনিক বাংলা গানের ফাঁকে ফাঁকেই আলোচনা চলল অধ্যাপক যশোধারা বাগচীর স্মরণে আয়োজিত এই অনুষ্ঠানে।
